Coachella Valley Firebirds forward Mitchell Stephens will continue playing for the team after he was signed to a two-year American Hockey League contract through the 2027-2028 season, officials announced Wednesday.
“We’re thrilled to have Mitchell back with the Firebirds. He brings invaluable NHL and championship experience, but just as importantly, he’s a leader our players look up to,” Firebirds General Manager Troy Bodie said in a statement. “His professionalism, character and commitment to winning help set the standard for our group every day.”
Stephens, 29, of Peterborough, Ontario, Canada appeared in 69 games during the Firebirds’ 2025-2026 season. He scored 12 goals and had 15 assists for 27 points. He has appeared in 123 National Hockey League games with the Tampa Bay Lightning, Detroit Red Wings, Montreal Canadians and Seattle Kraken.
He was a member of the 2020 Stanley Cup champion Lightning team.
Stephens joined the Firebirds during the 2024-2025 season, appearing in 35 regular-season games.
