The driver of a brown Ford Flex was killed when he crashed the SUV head-on into two cars while westbound in eastbound lanes of the Riverside (91) Freeway in Riverside, authorities said Monday.
The crash occurred at about 9:30 a.m. Sunday, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The CHP in Riverside was first notified by witnesses that the brown Ford Flex was being driven the wrong way in eastbound lanes.
“Preliminary information revealed the Ford collided with the Honda head on and redirected the Honda into the center divider,” the CHP said in a statement. “The Ford continued into the Number 2 lane where it collided head on with the Toyota.”
The Ford Flex driver was taken by ambulance to a hospital where he died from his injuries, the CHP said. He was later identified by the Riverside County Coroner’s office as 59-year-old Moreno Valley resident Daniel Romo Jr.
The drivers of the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla were also taken to hospitals by ambulance for treatment of injuries described by the CHP as “minor to major.”
Whether alcohol or drugs factored into the crash was part of the ongoing investigation, the CHP said.
