The Pasadena Tournament of Roses Association announced Wednesday the 21 marching bands selected to perform in the 138th Rose Parade, including several groups from Southern California.

Bands from across the United States and from Costa Rica, Japan and Mexico will travel to Pasadena to participate in the annual New Year’s Day parade, marching along Orange Grove and Colorado boulevards, according to organizers.

Southern California bands selected for the parade are the LAUSD All District High School Honor Band, the Pasadena City College Herald Trumpets, the Pasadena City College Tournament of Roses Honor Band, the Pasadena Unified School District All Star Band, the Salvation Army Tournament of Roses Band of Carson and the United States Marine Corps West Coast Composite Band of San Diego.

Tournament of Roses officials said bands are selected by a committee of volunteer members based on criteria such as musicianship, marching ability and entertainment value.

“As part of a longstanding tradition, the Tournament of Roses President visits each Rose Parade marching band in the months leading up to New Year’s Day,” organizers said. “The band visits offer students, band directors and communities a moment of celebration as preparations and fundraising get underway.”

Two additional bands will be added when the universities participating in the 113th Rose Bowl Game are determined in December.

— Aguiluchos Marching Band, Puebla, Mexico;

— Asahi University and Gifushogyo High School, Kyoto, Japan;
