Palmdale will be the host city for Special Olympics World Games competitors from St. Lucia and Cyprus.

The Games’ Flame of Hope will arrive in Palmdale on July 17, with runners carrying the torch from Summerwind Elementary School to the main entrance of the Antelope Valley Mall, where a ceremony will be held at 3 p.m.

The opening ceremony for the Special Olympics World Games will be held July 25 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. The Games will an estimated 7,000 athletes from 177 countries. It will be the largest sporting event in the Los Angeles area since the 1984 Summer Olympics.
