The losing Lakers and battling first-place Dodgers were in a virtual tie in a poll released to determine Los Angeles’ favorite professional sports team.

Three straight losing seasons may have toppled the Lakers – who used to be by far the most popular pro team in Los Angeles – from the top spot.

The Lakers were chosen by 37 percent of 2,400 Los Angeles County residents surveyed and the Dodgers by 35 percent.

The Clippers were chosen by 9 percent, Kings by 8 percent, Galaxy by 6 percent, Angels by 5 percent and Sparks by 1 percent.

The question about teams with Los Angeles in their names was asked as part of Forecast LA, an annual economic forecast and public opinion poll conducted by the Thomas and Dorothy Leavey Center for the Study of Los Angeles at Loyola Marymount University.

When the poll was conducted two years ago, 43 percent called the Lakers their favorite team, with 34 percent choosing the Dodgers.

“The Lakers’ three losing seasons have taken a toll on their status as the favorite team in Los Angeles,” said Fernando Guerra, professor of political science and Chicana/o studies at LMU and director of the center Thursday.

The telephone survey was conducted in January and February. The forecast is a partnership between the center and Beacon Economics, LLC.
