Ken Skupski won two sets, defeating his older brother Neal both times, in the Orange County Breakers 24-18 victory over the New York Empire in a World TeamTennis match Saturday night at Breakers Stadium at Palisades Tennis Club.
Ken Skupski teamed with Steve Johnson for a 5-4 victory over Neal Skupski and Marcus Willis in the match’s third set, men’s doubles. Ken Skupski and Andreja Klepac then defeated Neal Skupski and Kirsten Flipkens, 5-3, in the next set, mixed doubles, increasing the Breakers lead to 19-12, entering the final set, men’s singles.
Johnson lost to Willis, 5-4, sending the match into extended play. Under World TeamTennis rules, if the trailing team wins the final set, the match continues until either the leading team wins one game or the match is tied.
Willis won the first game of extended play, but Johnson won the second, ending the match as the Breakers avenged a 23-21 loss to the Empire (3-3) Thursday in New York City.
The Breakers (2-3) got a 5-0 victory from Yanina Wickmayer over Flipkens in women’s singles to open the match. Wickmayer and Klepac then lost to Flipkens and Maria Sanchez, 5-4, in women’s doubles.
The Breakers will play host to the Springfield Lasers (2-4) Sunday.
