A $12.12 million contract to build a sports center at the Rancho Los Amigos South Campus in Downey was unanimously approved Tuesday by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors.
The project will be built on five acres and will include three multipurpose sports fields, sports lighting, restrooms, a concession stand, an equipment storage room, office space for staff and a parking lot, according to Liz Odendahl, communications director for Supervisor Janice Hahn.
“The Sports Center is a part of a larger plan to redevelop 70 acres of the Rancho Los Amigos South Campus,” Odendahl said.
The South Campus was abandoned 30 years ago when Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center consolidated its hospital campus, Odendahl said.
The design-build contract is with Ohno Construction Company. The majority of the funding for the project, $10 million, will come from Hahn’s Fourth District discretionary funding while the remaining $2.12 million will come from Downey and pay for synthetic turf, office space and a multi-sport scoreboard.
When the project is completed, it will be leased to and operated by Downey.
