A 3-year-old colt has died after suffering a training injury at Santa Anita Park, the second training death at the track in three days.

“Ivan the Great experienced a suspected shoulder fracture during training Sunday morning at Santa Anita Park,” Santa Anita officials said in a statement provided to City News Service. “He was immediately attended to by an expert team of on-site veterinarians and transported via equine ambulance for advanced diagnostic imagining at the equine hospital at Santa Anita Park.

“Sadly, it was determined that it was an unrecoverable injury. According to current data from the Horse Racing Integrity and Safety Authority, shoulder fractures, while fairly rare, most often occur in horses when they start training or are returning off a layoff.

“His rider was immediately attended to by on-site paramedics and was transported to Huntington Hospital in Pasadena for further evaluation.”

Ivan the Great had five career races and one victory in his career, according to the industry website Equibase, but he hadn’t raced since Oct. 6.

On Friday, the 6-year-old mare Blushing died after suffering an unspecified training injury at Santa Anita.

The Arcadia track has now had five horses die from racing or training injuries this year.
