A 28-year-old man was killed and three others were injured Sunday in a crash on the Santa Monica (10) Freeway near downtown Los Angeles triggered by a wrong-way driver.

The crash occurred about 5:25 a.m. Sunday on the westbound freeway east of San Pedro Street because a Honda Civic was eastbound in the westbound lanes, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The Honda with only the driver on board crashed head-on into a Toyota Sienna with three people inside, according to the CHP.

The Honda driver was killed and identified by the Medical Examiner’s office as Andrew Fierro. His city of residence was not provided.

All three of the Toyota occupants suffered major injuries and were taken by ambulance to hospitals, the CHP reported.

A Sigalert issued at 7:06 a.m. closing four lanes on the westbound freeway east of Central Avenue was canceled at 9:06 a.m.

The crash remained under investigation.
