A man was killed Monday in a multi-vehicle crash on the Santa Ana (5) Freeway in Irvine.

The crash was reported about 8:30 a.m. on the northbound side of the freeway near Sand Canyon Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The victim, the driver of one of the vehicles, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Orange County Fire Authority.

A woman was in stable condition when taken to a hospital and a second man did not require treatment, the OCFA reported.

The crash backed up traffic in both directions.

Initially, all northbound lanes were closed but the CHP reopened at least one lane about 20 minutes after the crash was reported.

The CHP was investigating the crash.
