Seal Beach police warned beach-adjacent residents with electric vehicles of the dangers posed by Tropical Storm Rachel and Kelvin tides.
The warning posted on social media stated that fires may occur days or even weeks after lithium-ion batteries are exposed to salt water.
A vehicle that has been partially submerged or had its battery or electrical components breached by floodwater, should not be driven or charged even if it appears to be operating normally, police said. The vehicle should be towed to a certified technician for service before it is charged or driven.
“If you notice smoke, hissing, popping or unusual heat, move away immediately and call 911,” police said. “Do not attempt to move the vehicle or extinguish the fire yourself.”
