Drivers trying to make their way along the biggest freeway near Palm Springs finally got a break late Sunday as Interstate 10 at Indian Canyon was reopened after a horrific bus crash that killed 13 and injured dozens.
The westbound lanes of Interstate 10 at Indian Canyon had been shut down for most of Sunday due to the deadly pre-dawn tour bus-truck crash.
The tour bus plowed into the back of a slowed refrigerated truck on the west I-10 past the Indian Avenue interchange, killing 13 people and injuring 31, five critically.
Rescuers used a crane to separate the vehicles and search for victims of the grinding 5:17 a.m. collision, which peeled and compressed almost half of the coach cabin of the bus, authorities said.
The road closure jammed traffic for miles throughout the day as desperate drivers sought alternate routes and were forced onto nearby surface streets. Many surface streets nearest the freeway in the resort city experienced stop-and-go delays for much of Sunday.
