A segment of state Route 243 between Idyllwild and Banning will be narrowed to a single lane Thursday while crews complete a repair project that began last month, and motorists were warned Tuesday to expect delays.

According to Caltrans, between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. Thursday, crews will be applying the finishing touches to culverts that required emergency modifications on the mountain highway in December.

The work will require one lane on the two-lane highway to be closed.

Caltrans District 8 spokesman Shane Massoud said that crew members will be directing northbound and southbound traffic through the construction zone, which is roughly 10 miles south of Banning and 3.5 miles north of Idyllwild, at alternating intervals.

It was unknown how long motorists might have to line up and wait to go through the passage.

Damaged storm culverts have been repaired and replaced on each side of the highway, which was completely shut down for some of the work.

Caltrans officials advised motorists to consider using state Route 74 in either direction, going through Palm Springs to the east, or Hemet to the west, as an alternate road to reach their destinations and avoid delays Thursday.
