Two Perris residents were among the four people killed in a fiery head-on crash involving two pickup trucks, authorities said Monday.

They were Francisco Lazaro, 56, and Carolina Balerio De Lazaro, 52, the Riverside County coroner’s office said. They were in a 2001 GMC Sierra pickup truck driven by Francisco Lazaro that smashed into an eastbound 2006 Chevy Avalanche with the two men inside, the California Highway Patrol reported.

A San Marcos man and an Escondido man were not publicly identified pending family notification, the coroner’s office said.

The crash was about 5:10 a.m. Saturday on Cajalco Road at the Gavilan Road intersection, the CHP said.

The Chevy immediately caught fire and became engulfed in flames, the CHP said.

The Riverside County Fire Department dispatched 10 firefighters to the scene as well as three engine companies. Firefighters removed the bodies of the people trapped in one of the trucks, fire department spokeswoman Jody Hagemann said. All four people were pronounced dead at the scene, according to the coroner.

The cause of the crash remained under investigation by the CHP.
