Crews were working to restore power to hundreds of customers in Cathedral City Monday afternoon.

Power was initially knocked out at 1:18 p.m. to 1,710 utility customers in an area near Ramon Road and Canyon Vista Drive, according to Southern California Edison spokesman Robert Villegas.

Electricity was quickly restored to more than 1,000 of those customers, but 800 remained without power for part of the afternoon, Villegas said.

By 3:30 p.m., 529 customers were still without power, with no estimated time of restoration.

Villegas said crews believe the outage was caused by a faulty cable.

Firefighters responded around 1:15 p.m. on a report of an above-ground transformer blowout that sparked a small grass fire in the backyard of a home near Monte Vista and Ramon roads, Cathedral City Fire Battalion Chief Bob Allison said. He also said firefighters received reports of issues with two underground transformer vaults.

Villegas was unable to confirm whether those incidents were connected to the outage.
