A 23-year-old man died Friday in a head-on collision east of Temecula which investigators say was caused by a motorist attempting to pass a slower vehicle and encountered oncoming traffic.

Geordon Pollette of Aguanga died in the two-car crash on state Route 79 just west of Pauba Road about 12:20 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.

Matteo Monica, 50, of San Diego was at the wheel of an eastbound 2004 Mitsubishi Lancer when he encountered a slower vehicle and accelerated to get around, said Officer Mike Lassig.

Lassig said Monica “crossed over double yellow lines and entered the westbound traffic lane to pass the slower vehicle,” Lassig said.

Monica then suddenly encountered a westbound 2004 Kia Rio occupied by Becki Teague, 59, of Aguanga and Pollette, who was in the front passenger seat, Lassig said.

With no time to swerve, the two cars collided head-on, he said.

The CHP reported that Monica’s car caught fire.

Pollette suffered massive trauma and, within minutes, was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics, he said.

Teague suffered major injuries and was taken to Inland Valley Medical Center in Wildomar, where she was said to be in serious condition, according to Lassig.

Monica also suffered serious injuries and was taken to the same hospital.
