A fiery crash on the Riverside (91) Freeway early Sunday morning injured six people and caused major gridlock.

The crash was reported at 12:34 a.m. on the westbound side of the freeway east of Tyler Street, according to the Riverside City Fire Department.

Initial reports indicated that three vehicles were involved in the crash, and at least one vehicle caught fire.

Three people suffered serious injuries while three others suffered moderate injuries, fire officials said.

The crash caused major traffic delays on the westbound side, while the eastbound side had to be closed momentarily so that a street sweeper could clear debris that flew over the center divider.

The cause of the crash was not immediately clear.
