A ribbon-cutting ceremony that had been scheduled for Friday to celebrate improvements to the popular Indio Hills Trail was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic, city officials said Monday.

A new date will likely be rescheduled for the fall, according to Brooke Beare, a city spokeswoman, who said the move was “a result of new guidelines from state, federal and local public health authorities.”

The trail begins where Golf Center Parkway and 42nd Avenue intersect, west of WorldMark Indio, and offers sweeping views of the entire Coachella Valley.

Local recreation types have hiked a series of unmarked trails and roads known as the Golf Center Trail, Indio Hills Badlands Trail and East Indio Hills Trail in the area well before a new marked five-mile loop trail was completed last month.

The trail now boasts plenty of parking spaces and signage.

The work was a joint project of Indio, the Coachella Valley Mountains Conservancy, Friends of the Desert Mountains, Indio Water Authority and the Bureau of Land Management.
