A motorist who was killed when his car plunged down an embankment and slammed into a tree alongside the westbound Pomona (60) Freeway in Jurupa Valley was identified Monday as a 43-year-old Perris man.

Frank Torres was fatally injured about 4:40 p.m. Sunday in the crash near Hall Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Torres was driving his Toyota Avalon in the No. 3 lane when he veered onto the right shoulder, went off the side and “impacted a large tree on the north down-sloping embankment,” CHP Officer Juan Quintero said.

Several witnesses stopped to call 911, and Riverside County Fire Department crews reached the location within a few minutes.

According to the CHP, firefighters freed Torres from the vehicle about 5 p.m., and after he was removed, paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.

No lanes were closed because of the crash, which remains under investigation.

Quintero asked anyone who might have information to contact the CHP’s Riverside office at 951-637-8000.
