Several Los Angeles restaurants are joining a bi-coastal effort to provide plant-based meals to front-line workers, seniors and shelters in need of food during the coronavirus pandemic.

The eateries are accepting donations online for Support + Feed, an initiative launched in late March by actress Maggie Baird of Highland Park, the mother of pop star Billie Eilish.

“This started from our family’s concern for the many wonderful, small, plant-based restaurants in L.A. during this very challenging time. We wanted to support them, and at the same time support people who are in need right now,” Baird said.

The group’s goals are twofold: to support plant-based restaurants in Los Angeles and New York that are suffering as a result of stay-at-home orders issued to slow the spread of the virus; and to support “vetted organizations & groups who have been greatly impacted by the crisis such as first responders, hospitals, & senior centers.”

Visitors to the website www.supportandfeed.com can choose to donate directly to the restaurant(s) they wish to support, or select a general donation fund. Restaurants will continue to build up donations until they have a large enough order to create a complete order for a donation center.

Los Angeles-area participants in the program include Santa Monica-based food chain Veggie Grill, which operates 15 restaurants in the region; Donut Friend, Sun Cafe, Cena Vegan, PBJ.LA, Crossroads Kitchen, Sage Plant Based Bistro, Jackfruit Cafe, Native Foods, Hinterhof Vegan German Kitchen and Beer Garden, Krimsey’s Cajun Kitchen, Yoga-Urt, Plant Power in Long Beach, Pura Vita and by CHLOE.
