Firefighters were working Sunday to prevent a fire that engulfed two large haystacks just outside Blythe from spreading to surrounding vegetation.

The fire was reported at 2:46 p.m. at Seeley Avenue and Lovekin Boulevard, in an unincorporated area south of Blythe, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.

The haystacks were estimated to be between 40 and 50 tons and the fire had burned about an acre, according to Cal Fire Riverside. Forward spread of the flames has been halted, Cal Fire reported.

The department sent eight engines and two water tenders to the scene to battle the flames.

Firefighters from Blythe and neighboring Ehrenberg, Arizona, were assisting county fire crews at the scene.
