A fire that broke out late Wednesday alongside Highway 74 southwest of Perris blackened about 1 1/2 acres before crews got it under control.

The non-injury blaze was reported shortly after 5 p.m. near where Ethanac Road intersects the highway, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.

Multiple engine crews were sent to the location and encountered flames burning in an open field, bounded by roads.

No homes were immediately threatened as crews made progress encircling the blaze 30 minutes later. By 5:45 p.m., the brusher was declared completely contained.

Firefighters were expected to remain at the location, mopping up, until about 7 p.m.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
