A wildfire broke out Thursday afternoon just east of Lake Mathews, charring about five acres in less than an hour but not immediately threatening nearby homes.
The non-injury blaze was reported at 2:55 p.m. in the 19000 block of Gustin Road, near Harley John Road, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.
Eighteen engine crews and five hand crews were sent to the location and encountered flames in open space, burning at a moderate rate to the northeast.
Two Cal Fire air tankers and a water-dropping helicopter were summoned to make runs on the brusher, which was slowing down by 3:45 p.m., according to reports from the scene.
Sheriff’s deputies were blocking part of Gustin to facilitate emergency crews and their equipment.
There was no immediate word on what triggered the blaze.
