A section of Avenue of the States in Palm Desert will continue to be reduced to one lane in each direction into next week while crews replace a sewer line, city officials said Friday.
The closure began Wednesday and had been expected to wrap up by 5 Friday afternoon. The work may not be completed until next Friday, although it may finish up sooner, according to city spokesman David Hermann.
Lane closures will continue to last through the nighttime hours between Michigan Drive and Washington Street, where the remaining two lanes of vehicle traffic will be relocated to the westbound side of the four-lane artery.
The reason for the extended work timeframe was not immediately clear, although Hermann said it was not unexpected due to the nature of the work.
“It is not unusual for these sorts of projects to experience unexpected delays by virtue of the infrastructure that they encounter once they get under the roadway,” he said.
Hermann said delays are possible and urged motorists to use alternative routes.
