A fire that broke out Friday alongside Interstate 215 in Riverside burned nearly an acre and caused major slowing on the freeway, but no injuries were reported.
The blaze erupted for unknown reasons about 10:55 a.m. next to the exit ramp from I-215 to University Avenue and moved at a moderate rate through overgrown vegetation. Traffic on the 215 slowed as the smoke and flames became readily visible to passing motorists, but no SigAlert was issued.
A third alarm was declared as the fire burned toward the perimeter of the UC Riverside campus. But Riverside Fire Department crews stopped the fire’s forward rate of spread and established containment lines by 11:35 a.m., according to reports from the scene.
Firefighters were expected to remain at the location, mopping up, until about 2 p.m.
