A brush fire erupted Friday afternoon in the Box Springs Canyon area of Moreno Valley, charring nearly three acres before it was contained.

The non-injury brusher was reported about 3:30 p.m. in the area of Barclay Drive and Ironwood Avenue, at the foot of Box Springs Mountain, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.

Firefighters encountered flames moving at a moderate rate in dense vegetation, propelled by southwesterly winds. Several homes were in the vicinity, but crews deployed for structure protection, and the fire was held at bay, according to reports from the scene.

At 4:15 p.m., the brusher’s forward rate of spread was stopped, and it was roughly 50% contained.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
