A veteran firefighter with four decades experience was officially appointed Tuesday the new fire chief for Riverside County.
The appointment of Bill Weiser, who has worked in the county since the mid-1980s, was unanimously approved after Cal Fire assigned him to the position Monday.
“We are very pleased to welcome Bill as our new fire chief,” Board of Supervisors Chairman Manuel Perez said. “Chief Weiser brings great experience in the fire service to lead the Riverside County Fire Department in this crucial role.”
Weiser has been with Cal Fire since 1981, and his positions in that time include training captain at the Ben Clark Public Safety Training Center in Riverside, battalion chief for the Perris Battalion and, most recently, division chief for the Bautista Fire Camp, as well as the Hemet-Ryan Fire Attack Base.
“I look forward to serving as county fire chief in one of the most dynamic counties in America,” Weiser said.
Weiser succeeds Shawn Newman, who retired on June 15 after being chief since August 2018.
