Riverside County Deputy Public Defender Jeff Zimel has been appointed as a Superior Court judge by Gov. Gavin Newsom, it was announced Friday.
Zimel, 54, will serve in the western county region, according to Newsom’s office.
According to biographical information supplied by Newsom’s office, Zimel has worked in the Office of the Public Defender since 2011, mostly in a supervisory position.
Zimel was a sole practitioner from 1998 to 2011 and a deputy public defender in the Los Angeles County Public Defender’s Office from 1991-98.
Zimel fills the vacancy on the bench created by the retirement of Judge Michael B. Donner, who presided at the Riverside Hall of Justice.
Zimel, a registered Democrat, will be paid an annual salary of $214,601.
