A brush fire erupted Monday near a Winchester intersection, scorching about 10 acres before firefighters made progress surrounding it.
The non-injury “Keller Fire” broke out for unknown reasons about 1:30 p.m. in the area of Keller and Leon roads, just west of Highway 79, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.
Multiple engine crews and two hand crews — numbering close to 100 personnel — were sent to the location and encountered flames moving at a moderate rate toward a ridgeline.
Two Cal Fire air tankers and a water-dropping helicopter were summoned to make runs on the brusher, establishing tentative containment lines, which crews were fortifying by 2:15 p.m.
No homes or other structures were immediately threatened.
Sheriff’s deputies shut down Keller in both directions at the location for public safety.
