Sunday’s Los Angeles Football Club at San Jose Earthquakes game was postponed by Major League Soccer after three LAFC players tested positive for the coronavirus.

LAFC announced Wednesday night one player had tested positive and announced Friday two more players had tested positive. While the remaining players and staff have continued to test negative, the decision was made to postpone the game “out of an abundance of caution,” the league announced Saturday.

All MLS players undergo polymerase chain reaction tests every other day, including the day before each game. The confirmation of a COVID-19 case occurs when a player receives two consecutive positive test results.

None of the names of the players who have tested positive have been released.

The three positive tests among LAFC players are among five by players on Los Angeles professional teams announced since Tuesday.

Los Angeles Dodgers third baseman Justin Turner was removed from Game 6 of the World Series Tuesday following a positive coronavirus test. The Los Angeles Chargers announced Thursday starting guard Ryan Groy had tested positive.

A decision has not been made on whether the game will be rescheduled. The MLS regular season will conclude next Sunday.

Both LAFC and San Jose have one more regular-season game scheduled, both next Sunday, when LAFC is set to play host to the Portland Timbers at Banc of California Stadium while the Earthquakes are scheduled to play at Seattle.

LAFC assured itself of a playoff berth Wednesday night with a 2-1 victory over the Houston Dynamo.

MLS announced on Thursday that because multiple clubs will complete the season without playing the full 23 games, qualification for the 2020 MLS Cup Playoffs and the overall standings will be determined by points per game.

LAFC is fifth in the 12-team Western Conference, averaging 1.55 points per game. The top eight teams in the conference qualify for the playoffs, with the top four playing host to a first-round playoff game.

San Jose is seventh in the conference, averaging 1.29 points. It is not assured of making the playoffs.
