The Airport Fire in Corona was 100% contained Friday evening after burning about 1,100 acres.

The wildfire erupted shortly after 1 p.m. Dec. 2 within the Prado Reservoir, bordering Riverside and San Bernardino counties, on the north side of Corona Municipal Airport, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.

The flames quickly charred 50 acres and exploded in size to 750 acres in just over 24 hours, according to the county fire department, which added the fire burned a total of 1,087 acres.

Airport operations were halted shortly after the fire began and did not resume until Sunday.

Several structures were threatened in the initial stages of the fire, but crews prevented the flames from causing damage.

The blaze began in the same area as a small fire reported in the pre-dawn hours of Dec. 2 and was contained a short time later. There was no word on whether the two were connected, or what might have sparked either blaze.
