A 73-year-old jogger was fatally struck on a Murrieta street under extremely low visibility, authorities said Monday.

Nabil Alsalek of Murrieta died Sunday after he was hit at the intersection of Meadowlark Lane and Whitewood Road, according to the Murrieta Police Department.

The agency said that Alsalek was on Whitewood, jogging in “dense fog” shortly before 7 a.m. Sunday, when a 52-year-old motorist traveling at an unconfirmed speed southbound entered the intersection.

The victim crossed in front of the driver, who “attempted to swerve to avoid him” but couldn’t steer clear in time, resulting in impact, according to the police department.

The motorist, identified only as a Murrieta woman, immediately stopped and called 911. She wasn’t injured.

Murrieta Fire & Rescue personnel found the jogger in grave condition. He was taken to Inland Valley Medical Center in Wildomar, where he succumbed to his injuries roughly five hours later.

The motorist was questioned but not arrested.

“Neither alcohol nor drugs are believed to have been contributing factors in the collision,” according to the MPD.

Anyone with information about the accident was asked to contact the Traffic Unit at 951-440-2304.
