Missed it by just one week: Hot holiday beach weather will hit the Southland next weekend, but we’ll have to deal with cool, below-average temperatures for the rest of this Memorial Day holiday weekend.

Forecasters say Sunday and Memorial Day will be sunny in the the Los Angeles area after low clouds and fog burn off in the morning, but high temperatures downtown Los Angeles and at other inland areas will barely edge beyond 70, and local beaches will be even a few degrees cooler.

And wouldn’t you know it: By Tuesday, the day you’ve got to return to work, a mild warming trend will begin and the mercury in Los Angeles should be in the 80-degree range by Thursday.

The National Weather Service office in Oxnard said highs both days will be in the mid 60s to lower 70s in the Los Angeles area.

Winds on both days are expected to reach 15 mph from the southwest.

Farther south, in Orange County, “June Gloom” will begin early with patchy drizzle on Sunday and partly cloudy conditions on both days. Highs will be in the mid 60s to low 70s.

Overnight lows in the Southland will continue to be in the upper 50s, even when daytime temperatures are in the 80s later this coming week.
