Spiny lobster season opens Saturday, and authorities were warning divers to take precautions to avoid injury or death, pointing out that four to six people die each year while seeking the tasty crustaceans.
All divers are urged to:
–have a medical assessment by a doctor before diving;
–dive with a buddy;
–leave trip details with someone on shore before setting out so that they can contact authorities in case of trouble;
–formulate and follow dive plans, again informing someone on shore of one’s intentions;
–choose dives that match one’s ability, training, experience and fitness level; and
–practice emergency procedures such as dropping a weight belt and inflating a buoyancy compensator in a controlled setting.
