Firefighters went into defensive mode in the battle against a commercial building fire in the Vermont Slauson area of unincorporated Los Angeles, but flames spread to a second structure, authorities said Monday.
The fire was reported about 9:10 p.m. Sunday in the 5800 block of Hooper Avenue, Los Angeles County Fire Department Dispatch Supervisor Imy McBride said.
Arriving firefighters called for a second-alarm assignment after observing heavy fire throughout the structure, she said.
It was reported to be a wood shop.
Los Angeles city firefighters were assisting, and all units were outside the building training water on the fire and striving to keep it from spreading to neighboring structures, officials said.
It spread to the top of a building next door, McBride said.
Firefighters put out the flames at 11:06 p.m., she said.
