Red flag warnings for wildfire danger were issued Sunday for much of Los Angeles County due to expected gusty winds and low humidity overnight.

The warnings, issued by the National Weather Service, go into effect at 6 p.m. Sunday in the mountains and the Angeles National Forest, at 10 p.m. in the Santa Monica Mountains and the San Fernando and Santa Clarita valleys, and at midnight in downtown Los Angeles and the coastal areas.

They will remain in effect until 7 p.m. Monday.

Gusty north and northeast winds were expected to reach as high as 45 miles an hour Sunday evening.

Another mid-week heat wave is also coming to the Southland, with temperatures in the upper 90s expected in the valleys.

Sunday’s high in downtown Los Angeles was 79, but that was expected to jump to 91 on Monday and 95 on Tuesday, according to the NWS. In Woodland Hills, Sunday’s high was expected to be 83 on Sunday, 94 on Monday and 98 on Tuesday.

The heat wave is expected to subside on Friday, with cooler weather in the forecast for next weekend.
