Yet another hot weekend is on tap for inland areas, with a high-pressure system continuing drive temperatures into or near the triple-digits.
According to the National Weather Service, temperatures are expected to peak on Saturday, with areas away from the coast getting the brunt of the heat, while “near to above normal temperatures” are anticipated along the coast and in coastal valleys.
“High temperatures will be in (the) 95 to 108 range for the interior areas, including the lower mountains/foothills, 90 to 100 across the coastal valleys, and 75 to 90 across the coasts/inland coasts,” according to the NWS.
Although conditions are not expected to be as hot in coastal areas, forecasters warned that hotter-than-normal temperatures are possible in the afternoons, and residents should “take appropriate precautions.”
Forecasters said there will also be a 10% to 15% chance of some afternoon/evening showers or thunderstorms over the weekend, mainly in mountain areas.
“If thunderstorms do occur, there is the possibility that dry lightning may result, and may cause fire starts, adding to the fire weather concern,” according to the NWS.
An extreme heat warning will be in effect until 8 p.m. Sunday in the Antelope Valley and Antelope Valley foothills, where temperatures could reach as high as 110 degrees. A similar warning will be in place from 10 a.m. Saturday through 8 p.m. Sunday for the Santa Clarita, San Gabriel and San Fernando valleys, along with the Santa Monica Mountains Recreational Area, Calabasas, Agoura Hills and the inland coast including downtown. Those areas could see “very warm temperatures of 90 to 100 degrees,” forecasters said.
A less severe heat advisory will be in place until 8 p.m. Sunday for the San Gabriel Mountains, but temperatures could still reach 105 degrees.
