Authorities Friday were trying to figure out what happened when a man sheriff’s detectives tried to make contact with allegedly fired some shots at them in Bellflower and then fled.
At least one of the lawmen returned fire, as they all took cover, said Deputy Ryan Rouzan of the Sheriff’s Information Bureau.
No sheriff’s detectives were wounded during the Thursday shooting attack, said Deputy Trina Schrader of the Sheriff’s Information Bureau, and it was unclear if the suspect was wounded.
The shooting occurred about 2:45 p.m. in the area of Woodruff and Rosecrans avenues, Schrader said.
Detectives from the department’s Operation Safe Streets tried to make contact with the man, when he reportedly pulled out a handgun and began firing several rounds at them.
The suspect ran into a nearby residential area. Residents were asked to stay in their homes for safety reasons, Rouzan said.
The suspect was described as a 5-foot, 6-inch tall medium-build Latino man in his late 20s with a dark, short hair, weighing 170 pounds. He was last seen wearing black shorts and a baggie gray T-shirt.
