A fire that erupted Monday in a dump truck consumed the vehicle and forced the closure of a freeway on-ramp in Jurupa Valley, but no injuries were reported.

The blaze broke out about 11:10 a.m. in a truck that was entering the westbound Pomona (60) Freeway via the Mission Boulevard on-ramp, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Responding engine crews found flames extending from the cab into the bed of the truck, from which the driver safely escaped, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.

Firefighters quickly deployed around the vehicle to prevent the blaze from jumping into surrounding vegetation amid breezy conditions, according to officials at the scene.

CHP officers shut down access to the entrance ramp to provide space for first responders.

Crews fully contained the blaze at 11:35 a.m., officials said.

A hazardous materials unit was summoned to mop up diesel fuel and other material emanating from the burned-out truck.

Because of heavy smoke, traffic on both the west- and eastbound 60 was impacted in the area, causing major slowing, according to the CHP.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
