A fire erupted Wednesday in a tractor-trailer on the Moreno Valley (60) Freeway, just east of Moreno Valley, spreading throughout the truck by the time firefighters reached the location.

The blaze was reported just after 5 p.m. on the westbound side of the six-lane corridor, near Gilman Springs Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Multiple Riverside County Fire Department engine crews were sent to the location and encountered flames in the big rig’s cab and trailer, according to reports from the scene.

The trucker escaped the fire, but it was not immediately known whether he was injured.

CHP officers shut down the westbound slow lane for public safety.

The blaze was contained at 5:30 p.m., but firefighters were continuing to work on extinguishing the flames, officials said.

The truck’s cargo was not specified, and there was no immediate word on what triggered the blaze.
