Cal State Los Angeles President William Covino on Monday launched a new campaign aimed at improving the mental, physical and emotional well-being of students on campus.
The campaign, known as Mind Matters, aims at helping students cope with the mental pressures of college while dealing with stress, sleep deprivation and anxiety issues, according to school officials.
“All of our students face significant challenges as they navigate the demand of academic excellence, family responsibility and jobs,” Covino said during the university’s Convocation and Fall Faculty Day. “Our first lady, Debbie Covino, and I know attending college can be overwhelming and stressful and that our students face increasing academic, social and financial challenges.”
To help with the campaign, Covino said he authorized the appointment of two additional campus healthcare professionals and will increase space in the student health center to make room for additional psychological counselors and workshops.
Covino and his wife will also lead campus presentations aimed at teaching students good study habits and have already appeared on posters promoting the campaign.
