A firefighter sustained a minor injury but two civilians escaped unhurt when a 19-foot boat caught fire Friday in Newport Beach.

Police and firefighters were called about 8:35 a.m. to the area of 19th Street and Bay Avenue, Sgt. Keith Krallman of the Newport Beach Police Department said.

Firefighters put out the blaze aboard the open-bow vessel within 15 minutes of their arrival, Krallman said.

One firefighter sustained minor injuries to his lower legs, was treated at a hospital and released back to duty, Krallman said.

Two people who were aboard the boat when the fire broke out were not injured, he said.

U.S. Coast Guard personnel used booms to contain any possible pollutants or accelerants, Krallman said.

An investigation was underway into how the fire started.
