A 47-year-old surfer drowned in the waters near Sunset Beach in the Orange County city of Huntington Beach, the coroner’s office said.
The surfer was identified as Eric Reno of Sunset Beach, the coroner’s office reported.
There was no word of why the surfer may have experienced problems in the water before he died.
Reno encountered trouble in the water a little after 1 p.m. Friday at Sunset Beach, near 19th Street.
Paramedics rushed him to Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian in Newport Beach, where he was pronounced dead at 1:48 p.m. Friday.
A watch commander with the Huntington Beach Police Department could not be reached for immediate comment.
