A 19-year-old man and a 62-year-old woman were killed Friday when an SUV crossed into oncoming traffic and slammed into their compact car in West Riverside.

The collision occurred about 12:35 p.m. on Central Avenue, near Montclair Drive, according to the Riverside Police Department.

Sgt. Ryan Wilson said the 28-year-old driver of a newer model Jeep was going west on Central Avenue when he allowed the vehicle to drift into opposing traffic lanes, where the driver of a Toyota Corolla was unable to maneuver out of the SUV’s path.

The two vehicles collided, and the driver of the Toyota, identified only as a Riverside resident, died at the scene, according to Wilson.

The sedan’s passenger, also identified only as a Riverside resident, was taken to Riverside Community Hospital, where she died from her injuries a short time later, Wilson said.

The Jeep driver escaped with minor injuries. He was not arrested, but Wilson said the investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with information about the crash was asked to contact the police department’s traffic bureau at 951-826-8722.
