A blaze inside a West Hills home caused by what a Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman called “carelessness with a candle” was extinguished in about 20 minutes Monday evening.
The fire broke out about 8:40 p.m. in the 24600 block of Gardenstone Lane, near the West Hills Recreation Center, according to Brian Humphrey of the Los Angeles Fire Department.
The bulk of the blaze was confined to one room on the second floor of the 2,417-square-foot home, Humphrey said. When crews arrived at the home, all of the occupants had safely exited.
The fire was out by 9 p.m. One resident was evaluated at the scene due to smoke exposure, Humphrey said. That patient declined to be taken to a hospital, and no other injuries were reported.
“The Los Angeles Fire Department is seeing a strong uptick in local fires caused by candles, with a trio of such fires recently that thankfully caused no injuries, but led to fearful moments and costly home damage,” Humphrey said.
“Firefighters suggest that anyone desiring candle-like ambiance should protect their home and family by using only a battery-powered simulated candle that features a cool-to-the-touch LED lamp.”
