Authorities Monday identified a 66-year-old man who was found shot to death in his home in the unincorporated Florence-Firestone area.

The shooting was first reported as a rescue response call just before 4 p.m. Sunday in the 8700 block of Bandera Street, between the Harbor (110) and Long Beach (710) freeways, near Huntington Park, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Deputy Tracy Koerner.

“The call indicated that a friend of the victim had arrived at the house and while looking through a window, saw the victim on his sofa, unresponsive,” Koerner said.

“Deputies arrived on scene and made entry into the location and saw the victim was suffering from one gunshot wound to the upper torso.”

The man, identified by the coroner’s office as Leroy Smith, was pronounced dead at the scene, Koerner said.

Anyone with information on this killing was asked to call the sheriff’s Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500 or Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS (8477).
