The premiere of the final episode of the second season of “The Mandalorian” enabled the Disney+ “Star Wars” series to become the first non-Netflix series to top Nielsen’s list of the most-watched streaming programs, according to the latest report released Thursday.
Viewers watched 1.336 billion minutes of the series’ 16 episodes between Dec. 14-20, including the finale of the eight-episode second season which became available Dec. 18. Nielsen began releasing reports on streaming viewers on Sept. 5. The initial report covered viewing between Aug. 3-9.
“The Mandalorian” has been the only non-Netflix programming in the Top 10 for seven consecutive weeks. Nielsen also measures viewership for Amazon Prime Video and Hulu.
“The Office” was second, with 1.311 billion minutes watched of the 192 episodes of the 2005-13 NBC comedy. Viewership was up 2.5% from the week covered in the previous report when “The Office” finished first a record seventh time with 1.279 billion minutes watched. It has finished second 16 times.
“The Office” left Netflix Dec. 31, moving to the NBCUniversal streaming service Peacock.
The Netflix film “A California Christmas” was the only new program in the Top 10, finishing 10th with 581 million minutes watched in its first week of release.
The Netflix adult animated coming-of-age comedy “Big Mouth” dropped out of the Top 10, one week after finishing ninth.
The Top 10 consisted of three original streaming series, one streaming film and six series that originally aired on North American broadcast or cable networks.
The Top 10 programs were “The Mandalorian”; “The Office”; “The Crown”; “Grey’s Anatomy”; “Manhunt: Deadly Games”; “Supernatural”; “Virgin River”; “Criminal Minds”; “Schitt’s Creek”; and “A California Christmas.”
