An ex-con accused of shooting a neighbor is facing attempted murder and other charges.
Roberto Barajas Aguilar pleaded not guilty Wednesday to two counts of attempted murder and one count of possession of a firearm by a felon, all felonies.
He is also charged with a misdemeanor count of being a prohibited person owning ammunition and faces sentencing enhancement allegations for attempted premeditated murder, inflicting great bodily injury, personal use of a firearm, discharge of a firearm and discharge of a firearm causing great bodily injury.
Aguilar, who’s being held on $1 million bail, is scheduled to return to the Central Justice Center in Santa Ana on April 28 for a pretrial hearing.
Aguilar is accused of shooting a 37-year-old neighbor in the thigh and abdomen at his house in the 400 block of East Camile Street about 11:20 p.m. March 28, according to Santa Ana police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna. Two other family members of the victim were present, but escaped injury, he said.
The injured victim was taken to an area hospital in critical condition, but survived, Bertagna said.
What prompted the shooting was unclear, Bertagna said.
