What started as a 1,000-square-foot blaze has grown 10 acres in Coachella Friday.
The Riverside County Fire Department received a report of the vegetation fire at 1:06 p.m. Friday at the intersection of Avenue 52 and Fillmore Street.
Emergency responders arrived to find an approximately 1,000-square-foot area on fire involving brush, heavy fuels, tires and debris.
The blaze has since grown to 10 acres and continues to burn, according to the most recent update from officials at 3:48 p.m.
Ten engines, three water tenders and two chief officers were on the scene and committed to the blaze for an “extended period of time.”
The California Highway Patrol closed down Fillmore Street between avenues 52 and 53 while the fire was being contained.
The cause of the blaze was under investigation.
