A fire that erupted in a Riverside home caused extensive damage, displacing the five occupants, authorities said Wednesday.

The non-injury blaze occurred at about 6:50 p.m. Tuesday at 11939 Quantico Drive, near Collett Avenue, according to the Riverside Fire Department.

Battalion Chief Pat Hopkins said four engine crews and a truck company, numbering about 20 personnel, were sent to the location and encountered flames inside and outside the single-story residence.

Two of the occupants, including a 6-year-old boy, narrowly escaped the fire prior to firefighters reaching the house, Hopkins said.

Crews got the fire under control 20 minutes later.

“The cause of the fire is currently under investigation,” Hopkins said. “It appeared to originate from the exterior of the home and then extended into the interior.”

A neighboring property’s fence and patio furniture were also damaged, he said.

Three adults and two children were displaced by the blaze, which caused an estimated $200,000 in damage, according to Hopkins.

The occupants received a fire department-issued Aid to Victims of Emergency debit card to help pay for temporary lodging and other expenses, the battalion chief said.
